Roseanne: racist???

Last week, the star of the hit ABC show, “Roseanne,” sent out a racist tweet regarding Valerie Jarrett, a former government official and woman of color. The person who tweeted the demeaning messages, Roseanne Barr was quickly met with anger and backlash, especially from her fans. Barr deleted her tweet, which read, "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj”. (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2018/06/02/politics/valerie-jarrett-roseanne-barr-racist-tweet/index.html)The comparison of Valerie Jarrett (vj) to an ape, as if she were less than human, sparked the cancellation of “Roseanne” and major criticism of Barr in the media. For example, Jim Parsons from “The Big Bang Theory” spoke out against Barr, saying, "Reading that tweet and reading it several times ... I was like, 'How did you type that?’” (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2018/06/02/us/jim-parsons-how-did-you-type-that-cnntv/index.html) While I am disgusted that someone like Barr, with such a vast fan base has said what she did, it also an important teaching moment. This allows many Americans to understand that racism is still alive and well, especially in the media. It brings awareness of a problem that is often shoved under the rug. In addition, the fact that Parson criticized Barr in the media, it exposes his fans and followers of CNN to how flawed Barr’s tweet was and it shouldn’t be ignored or defended.
